Life was pretty hard for the poor, but not as bad as the depression that the war ended.

During WWII, life was dominated by the war effort. Paper, rubber, food all were rationed so that more could be committed to the war. The industries of the time were all concentrated on building supplies. The massive recruitment of soldiers left huge labor shortages often filled by blacks and women, and everyone felt the fact that much of the young men in their neighborhoods were gone. Even children worked by having scrap drives. Comics, movies and other mediums of entertainment were filled with Propaganda. In general, all of American society, even on the homefront, was oriented towards the war, which is why this war is considered a total war.

The rich and poor in the allied nations pulled together to make victory possible. They worked in war plants, grew gardens, participated in the rationing programs and bought billions of dollars of the War Bonds. It did not matter what was your income level - the people worked hard together. This was true of all the allied nations.

In nations that were oppressed such as Japan, Germany and Italy the poor people struggled. Toward the end of the war those nations were beginning to starve. They did not have enough food either on their home front or their war front. Many of their armed forces were starving to death. The rich people began to starve too because there was no food for them to purchase and their stores began to run out. Many of the bombed cities had hundreds of thousands of homeless people and orphans roaming around looking for food, clothing and someone to help them.

At the end of the war, the Americans came to their aid. They sent food, clothing, medicine and tents to set up internment camps.
