Martin Luther believed that political authority should be superior to religious authority, and that the two should not be shared by the same person. he relied on the kings of Germany (the holy Roman Empire at that time) to save his life when the Catholic church wanted his death, and they were willing to do it because his beliefs gave them more control.

as far as social order, martin luther preached that "equality" was merely spiritual, and that socially, people had to learn their place and stay in it. this is evident through his disassociation with the peasant revolt in Germany, 1524
