Forced the other countries to explore and find different routes for trade. Once Portugal found its route to India, it established trade routes there and blocked the route to all the other European countries. This forced the Europeans countries to look elsewhere. Ultimately, this led to the discovery and America and such. :)

The Portuguese meant to circumvent Africa to reach India. They never reached India but set up many trade forts along the way and established a trade of cloth and wheat for gold and slaves.
