Booker T. Washington was the founding principal of what is now known as Tuskegee University (It was known as "Tuskegee Normal & Industrial Institute" when Dr. Washington started it in 1881. He picked July 4th as the first day of class because he wanted to honor the idea of independence.
Booker T. Washington was a strong supporter of vocational education for black people (in those days called "Negroes"). At a time when many white people believed Negroes were naturally inferior and should not be educated, Washington became a spokesman for the idea that education would benefit black people and help to lift them out of poverty. That is why he founded a vocational school called the Tuskegee Institute.

W.E.B. Dubois opposed the ideas of Booker T. Washington because he thought Washington accepted segregation while promoting economic advancement. Dubois felt that discrimination should be tackled head on with direct confrontation.
They had different opinions because of where they grew up. Washington grew up as a slave so he knew demanding equality was pointless because it would not work. He has the rational idea. DuBois grew up free in the north and was blinded by the resluts of demanding what was right.

DuBois believed that African Americans should attack racism. He was involved in the founding of the NAACP, which took many cases of racial discrimination to court in an effort to get the nation to live up to the promises of the 13th and 14th Amendments. Washington believed that African Americans should cooperate with whites and accept temporary segregation to get along with southern whites. He thought that racial equality would come gradually.
