One of the last Confederate forts to hold out against the North was Fort Fisher. This fort was a sea fortress actually on a peninsula off the North Carolina coast. It had long been fortified to a high level, a level too high to be considered earlier in the war.

In late December of 1864, a huge Union fleet with troops on board approached the fort with what was going to be a naval and military soldier joint campaign. General Butler was in charge of the Union's armada that was complete with ironclad warships & troop carrier vessels. The Federal warship canon fire on Fort Fisher failed to succeed, so General Butler called off the attack.

He commanded a second attempt on the fortress in January of 1865. Confederate resistance was still stiff. After heavy losses, the joint naval & military assault forced the capture of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865.

A smaller less important Confederate fort, Fort Anderson surrendered a month later after a three day siege.

The port of Charleston, South Carolina held out until the very end of the war. Poor cooperation between the Union's land and sea forces were a contributing factor there. More than one major efforts were made to capture the port.

When did the 7 south states secede from the union?

How did the Confederates overrun Union forces at Henry House Hill causing a Union retreat?

At the First Battle of Bull Run, the Confederate forces under Gen. Thomas Jackson refused to cede control of the hill to the Union's 14th Brooklyn regiment. Confederate Brig. Gen. Barnard Bee gave Gen. Jackson his famous nickname "Stonewall Jackson" apparently in response to the stubborn resistance by Jackson and his men to hold the hill against repeated Union assaults. In the end, Confederate reinforcements forced the Northern troops into a disorganized retreat. Bee was mortally wounded late in the battle, and there was some question whether he intended his "stone wall" comment as praise or scorn.

What strategies were used in the Battle of Bull Run?

The Union lost the Battle of Bull Run. It used the strategy of having the three wings of its army attack at three totally different times in three different places. The Confederates could marshall their forces and defeat each wing when it attacked. If all three wings had attacked the Confederate lines at the same time instead of using a convoluted battle plan, the Union probably would have won and the Civil War might have ended with that battle.

Fort Sumter battle?

First shots of the war. Lincoln had declared that he would hold the Union garrison on the tiny island of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour. The Confederate artillery fired on it, and it surrendered. Lincoln reacted by calling for 75,000 volunteer troops. The war was officially on.

When did the confederacy come up with the plan to fight a defencive war?

Answer The "plan" was pretty obvious. The Confederate States wanted to secede from the Union. The Union wanted to fight to hold it together. So the Union had to go into the Confederates States and disarm them and convince them to stop. All the Confederates had to do was to keep the Union armies from moving into their states.
