One of the last Confederate forts to hold out against the North was Fort Fisher. This fort was a sea fortress actually on a peninsula off the North Carolina coast. It had long been fortified to a high level, a level too high to be considered earlier in the war.
In late December of 1864, a huge Union fleet with troops on board approached the fort with what was going to be a naval and military soldier joint campaign. General Butler was in charge of the Union's armada that was complete with ironclad warships & troop carrier vessels. The Federal warship canon fire on Fort Fisher failed to succeed, so General Butler called off the attack.
He commanded a second attempt on the fortress in January of 1865. Confederate resistance was still stiff. After heavy losses, the joint naval & military assault forced the capture of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865.
A smaller less important Confederate fort, Fort Anderson surrendered a month later after a three day siege.
