A member of Confederate General Joseph Johnston's staff put forth a way to save Vicksburg. It was Colonel E. J. Harvie who sent his plan to Joseph R. Davis, Jefferson Davis' son. Harvie's plan was to bring Braxton Bragg's army and combine it with Johnston's troops. With these two combined forces, Harvie believed that the siege on Vicksburg could be ended.

When did union forces take Vicksburg?

The American Civil War battle that took place at Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1863, concluded on the 4th of July of that year. After a 40-day siege, the exhausted Confederate forces finally laid down their arms to the victorious Union army led by Ulysses Grant.

What were some military options of the South in 1863?

Generally speaking, the prominent generals of the Confederacy were skilled commanders. As 1863 came upon the South and the North showed no signs of relaxing its efforts to conduct offensives, there were a number of military options the South could have pursued. One was to send a sizable force to Tennessee and retake this Confederate state. This would provide for more recruits and more supplies for the military. By succeeding in this, the South would be in an excellent position to save Vicksburg. The attack in Pennsylvania could have waited. There was an excellent chance that by combining the forces of Bragg and Johnston, this could be done. The offshoot of this would also be that from Tennessee, an attack on Cincinnati, Ohio could be combined with Lee's raid on Pennsylvania to cause real panic in the North. All of this is speculation of course.

What was the view of the top Confederate generals on the value of Vicksburg?

High ranking Confederate generals were clearly aware of the propaganda value for the Union on the capture of Vicksburg. So did President Jefferson Davis, however, Davis wanted to save Vicksburg. General Robert E. Lee valued the city primarily because Vicksburg prevented the Union from having uninterrupted lanes of commerce on the Mississippi River. Lee, however, did not want to weaken his own army's strength in the East. General Longstreet believed that as long as the Rebels could hold other positions on the banks of the Mississippi, Vicksburg was expendable. As for General Johnson, he valued Middle Tennessee much more than Vicksburg and Beauregard seemed to pay little attention to Vicksburg.Looking back, the levels of commerce from northern states using the Mississippi River indicated that the amount of their trade in 1860, was less after the fall of Vicksburg in 1863. With all that said, it's clear that the propaganda value for the Union was a huge plus, but it did not change the course of the outcome of the war. Defending Rebels who surrendered at Vicksburg were paroled by Major General US Grant.

The key to control of the the Mississippi river in the civil war was the city of?

At the beginning of the war, the answer would be New Orleans. After that fell, St. Louis and Memphis were both significant pressure-points. Finally, the river-port of Vicksburg became the last Confederate stronghold on the river. For this reason, Jefferson Davis urged the garrison commander, Pemberton, to hold it at any cost, while the area commander Joe Johnston was urging Pemberton to evacuate the place and save his army. U.S. Grant was able to exploit this confusion, and he took the surrender of Vicksburg on the Fourth of July 1863.
