The Federal blockade prevented them from carrying out trade, particularly in cotton, overseas. Cotton was the South's main source of income, so to lose that was an incredible blow to the economy.

By the Summer of 1864, the South had lost much territory to the invading Union armies. The farmlands of the South could no longer feed the Confederate armies, causing food shortages. Many slaves that had worked the farmlands during the war had deserted and labor to work the farms became scarce. The effects of the Union's blockade of major Southern ports was a factor in the war, but was not a deciding one. Many ships still slipped past Union blockades because the vastness of the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean gave privateers room to maneuver past Union ships. Another economic factor was the hyperinflation of the Confederate currency. Prices sky rocketed and the Confederate dollars bought hardly anything.
