Why were Jefferson and his republican party so against the alien and sedition acts?

The acts made it illegal to write or protest against the government. For Jefferson this was a basic principal to the founding of the country. He states this in the first paragraph of the Declaration. So, he would protest an law that takes away the right of disagreement with the government. Jefferson was a true revolutionary and felt that all governments needed to be guided by the people. He felt that every 24 years there should be a constitutional convention to update it.
