it wasnt so much a revolt but Englands answer to keeping the Irish down. during the trouble times 1916-1922 the Irish Republician Brotherhood( I.R.B.)later the I.R.A. where a thorn in the side of the British government and so the British sent over a unit of 'elite'soldiers to sort out the problem. they where known as the Black and Tans because that was the pattern of their uniform. they weren't that elite as they shot and harrasaed unarmed people mainly in the city of Dublin they blew up small towns outside the city and eventully went home as the fighting Irish refused to fall under their bully tactics.
