As Japan attacked Pearl Habour (7th December 1941) the Americans cut off the oil supply to Japan which 2/3 of Japan's oil.The Battle of Pacific is the battle which defeated them. MacArthur lead the attack using a 'leapfrogging' tactic where they took island after island slowly weakening them.

The USA dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima (6th August1945) and Nagasaki (9th August 1945) was the real end .Japan then surrendered on the 14th August and the war was finally over. But also bear in mind, that the USA did not fight the Japanese all alone, there were other countries in the war as well.

AnswerIn terms of overall causes and strategies which lent themselves to the US victory, and NOT talking about tactical victories, the main reasons that Japan lost were:
  • Radically lower Japanese industrial output that the US. Even with allocating about 70% of US production to the war in Europe, the US was able to significantly out-produce Japan in terms of war equipment.
  • Inferior Japanese technological development. While Japan started the war with a considerable technological edge in the Navy and Air Force, they essentially were unable to produce any meaningful technological advancements throughout the war. The US, on the other hand, produces several key advancements which radically increased US combat ability. Radar and the proximity fuse are the most notable.
  • The effective elimination of the entire Japanese Merchant Marine by US submarines. The US submarine force achieved what the German UBoats could not: the strangling of a import-dependent island nation by sinking its merchant marine.
  • Japan failed to secure its communications, allowing the US to gain a large strategic advantage by reading their enemy's messages.
  • Inability of the Japanese Navy to change its pilot replacement training system to make up for combat losses. From late 1943 onward, Japan suffered from a constant lack of well-trained pilots - this was due not to any US action, but to a failure in the organization of its pilot training system.
  • Finally, the US strategic direction generally played very well to American combat strengths. Japanese combat strategies did not generally play to Japanese strengths; rather, they were formulated to conform to political and social customs, rather than cold military necessity.

The simple answer is that the US out-produced Japan in a long war - it was simply able to absorb losses better, and crank out replacements faster, than Japan could.

The Americans had no feasible strategies for defeating Japan in World War 2. The reason for this is purely political. Prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States influenced by the American public pursued a Pacifist and Isolationist Policy. This American public thinking is grounded on their World War 1 experience averse to their country's involvement in the European War. This was compounded further by the Great Depression in the thirties. This Pacifist Policy influenced strongly by the American people hampered any aggressive defensive strategies. The evidence for this is derived from the American expenditures for its Army. There were less than 20,000 American soldiers in the Philippines and the Hawaiian Island. the linchpin of American defense in the Pacific and less than 100,000 overall in the Continental United States. The only armed services that receive adequate but not substantial budget is the US Navy with its 7 carriers and old surface fleet. Although the Washington strategists knew the intentions of the most likely adversary in the Pacific, Japan, they tried to develop a defensive strategy based on limited resources. This strategy is reactive rather than pre-emptive.

When the USA got involved in WW2, there was 2 key ways that the US defeated Japan, first was that they had the naval advantage over Japan but this only fended them off. What led to Japans surrender in WW2 was the use of the 2 Atomic bombs in WW2 which devastated hundreds of thousands of lives.
