Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative or SDI,better known as Star Wars
involved satellite -based lasers that could sense and destroy nuclear missiles.
It was always a long way from being practical but money was spent on trying to develop such a system. I believe Reagan offered to share the design for the system with the Russians if it was ever developed. Reportedy the idea scared the USSR into pumping so much money into their own defenses that it helped to provoke the civil unrest which broke up the Soviet Union.

(just as the Germans outflanked the Maginot Line by going through Belgium) and the end result will be the destruction of the human race with nuclear weapons.
