For all practical purposes, the US Civil War was the result of the Republican, Abraham Lincoln, winning the 1860 US presidential election. As the Republican Party was founded on the belief that slavery was a national crime, many people in the South feared that despite Lincoln's assurances not to end slavery where it already existed, combined with his pledge to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act, South Carolina and later 6 other states seceded. It was the Southern belief that Lincoln would do all he could to damage the institution of slavery. Later, after the surrender of Fort Sumter, more slave states seceded. In total eleven slave states formed the Confederate States of America.
