This case was appealed to the Supreme Court after a ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. A synopsis of the case can be found here: http://www.patc.com/articles/detail_srti.php?id=LL113. This case involved a student's right to freedom of speech. While the Fifth Circuit ruled that the school did indeed violate this student's First Amendment rights, it allowed those rights to be violated by granting the school qualified immunity.

Another Answer: I an in Livingston parish and you can drop as low as 17, with parental consent and as low as 16, with court appeal, and 18 by your self. I am in Lafayette Parish and the legal age is 18 years old. It was changed five years ago. There are two ways to get a diploma outside of going to high school. You must be enrolled and attending school unless you are at least 18 years old. Charter School allows you to earn a high school diploma. (This is NOT Laps or Caps.) The Adult Education Program allows you to earn a GED diploma. When asked what if the child doesn't go to school, I was told that the school board proceeds with court and jail for the parent. I was quoted this information from the Lafayette Parish School Board today.
