The people who came to the plays actually had a show of their own. We would be pretty upset with them if we went to a play then. The theater was three levels. The ground floor was full of men and they would stand through a play. It was noisy and there would be ladies selling Oranges. The men could get quite rowdy and even have fights. The next level was a balcony section and it had chairs for people sit and watch the play. Generally, it was couples some married and many men brought their mistresses to the plays. They would of a wealthy class so dressed up. The third level was a floor where the ladies of the evening worked and they would get men to come up so they could do their business. Often outside of the theater these ladies would also hang out. I am not sure how many people actually watched the play. The theater would also be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The candles that lit the stage would often catch fire and they were made of tallow so they gave off a greasy stinky smell. Not many people washed themselves or their clothing so that would add to the candles smell.
Very Noisy, loud, smelly and packed. People for the most part stood for the performances.
The audience were quite rowdy, especially the underlings who were seated right below the stage. If the underlings disliked the play they would throw rotten produce at the actors on stage.
