The name Federal Republic of Germany originally applied to "West Germany" but is now the name for all of reunified Germany. From its founding in 1949 until reunification in 1990, the capital of West Germany was Bonn. It continued as the seat of government until early 1999.
After reunification the federal parliament voted to move the capital back to Berlin which is considered a separate "state" within the republic.
Germany was divided into two countries during the Cold War (1949 to 1990):Federal Republic of Germany ('Bundesrepublic Deutschland' or BRD, West Germany), capital BonnGerman Democratic Republic ( 'Deutsche Demokratische Republik' or DDR, East Germany), capital Berlin. In 1990 the DDR was dissolved, and its former territory became part of the Federal Republic of Germany, which then moved its capital to Berlin.
In 1968, Germany was split into two countries; the city of Berlin was split correspondingly. Each country had its own capital. These were:The German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany. Their capital was East Berlin. The Federal Republic of Germany, also known as West Germany. Their capital was Bonn.In 1989-1990, East Germany collapsed and merged with West Germany. East and West Berlin were also reunited, and Berlin eventually became the capital of the reunited Germany (which is still formally called the Federal Republic of Germany).
It was Bonn. Let's be clear on this: Bonn was the capital of the FDR, the Federal Republic of Germany, West Germany. But the DDR, the Deutches Democratik Republik, The German Democratic Republic, East Germany, the capital was Berlin. And no, I am not for one moment suggesting East Germany was democratic, but that was its name......
