A charter colony was one of the three types of colonies that existed in the British Empire during its heyday. The others were proprietary colonies and royal colonies. Basically, any group that wanted to start a charter colony had to get a charter from the King, and that is why they were called that. The charter gave them more freedom that other colonies that were were ruled more directly.
