What was the cold war and what did it have to do with space travel?

The Cold War was a war between the Soviet Union ( USSR ) and the United States ( USA ). The USSR strongly believe in the economic policy of communism where the people have no private property and everything is shared equally. However the USA strongly believed in capitalism, where people have their own decision and competition is always faced also known as a " free market ."
The USA tried to carry about the policy of Containment ! where they would just keep communism in Europe and don't make it spread. However President Truman offended USSR leader Stalin and it turned too a war where they could turn countries into communist or capitalist believers.
I believe it is called a space travel, maybe because of it's time period 1945-1990
