The corrupt bargain refers to an apparent deal made between Adams and Henry Clay. Clay was able to swing the electoral votes from the states he had carried over to Adams and Adams made Clay his Secretary of State, a position which in the past had been a stepping stone to the presidency, The Jackson supporters, angry that Jackson was not made president event though he was the leader in both popular and electoral votes, made sure that people were constantly reminded of this "corrupt bargain" and I am sure that it cast a shadow on Adams' character for some people.
