What it the Oldest rank in the Marine Corps?

Since Samuel Nicholas was appointed a Captain of the Continental Marines five days before he began recruiting the balance of the Corps, it stands to reason that he was the only Marine for five days. Because he was commissioned as a Captain, the oldest rank by at least those five days was that of Captain.

Why does the U.S. military not have any five star generals?

The five star rank was last used in World War 2, when it was necessary for theater commanders such as Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur to hold a rank that was at least equal or senior to general officers of other nations under their command. The title of the rank is General of the Army, but it is equivalent to Field Marshal in foreign services. John J. Pershing was eventually promoted to the rank during WW1, and five general officers held the rank during or after 1944 in WW2: George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry H. Arnold, and Omar Bradley who was promoted to five star rank as an honorarium in 1950.In normal times (even during the current War on Terror) the highest rank a general officer may hold is four stars, usually called simply "general" or sometimes "full general." All general officers wear one or more stars, and all are addressed simply as "General" as a mark of respect. We have even had a couple of six star Generals of the Armies (plural), but this rank was strictly an honorarium and has been held by only two men in history: John J. Pershing after WW1, and George Washington long after his death.A sidebar: While not a five-star rank, Ulysses Simpson Grant in 1866 was awarded the special four star rank of General of the Army of The United States at a time when the highest rank in the army was Lieutenant General (three stars).

Both the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard have the rank of admiral. Technically, there is a five star admiral ranking, but this rank is reserved for wartime use only.

Why are the stars on a master chief's and senior chief's anchor inverted?

Unlike the stars used to represent officers of flag rank (Admirals) which point upward, the stars on the anchor of the Senior Chief Petty Officer and the Master Chief Petty Officer point down because they do not THEMSELVES represent a higher rank as do the one, two, three, and four stars of Admirals as they are promoted (five star Admirals... and Generals for that matter... exist only in time of war). The anchor and star(s) of the Senior and Master Chief Petty Officer TOGETHER represent rank.

Are you still eligible for promotion to staff sergeant if you meet the junior date of rank but not the armed forces active duty base date for the Marine Corps?

No, eligibility for promotion to staff sergeant in the Marine Corps requires meeting both the junior date of rank and the armed forces active duty base date. If you don't meet the requirements for both, you would not be eligible for promotion.

Are there any five star generals in military now?

No. The need for a 5 star general for the United States began during World War 2 and was stopped after the promotion of Gen. Omar Bradley. Since the Marine Corps is a part of the Department of the Navy it is very unlikely that a Marine Corps general would ever get promoted to the rank of a '5 Star' general.
