There were many battles on both fronts that were literally hand to hand. The US Military in taking Manila from the Japanese was inch by inch and brutal. The Pacific islands each had to be taken from the Japanese and places like Midway and Pilue were battles that men suffered and died. In Europe the D Day beachhead found many men dead on the beach and the taking of Monte Casino in Italy was so bad that a day was called so the wounded and dead could be removed off the mountain. The Germans were in the Abby on top of the mountain and the men had to climb up to take the Abby from them. All of them were deadly and the men fighting were brave and determined.
