Acting on the advice of his religious advisor Archbishop William Laud, Charles 1 (King of Scotland, England and Ireland from 1600-1649) persecuted all Puritans and religious dissidents in the realm. The Puritans opposed Laudâ??s directives to restore religious rites and other Catholic practices. It led to the emigration of Puritans to North America, and they were the first occupants of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
