The white rose. The red rose was the emblem of the House of Lancaster.
One of the chief political happenings was the struggle for possession of the throne between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. From 1455 to 1485, they engaged in a series of battles, vying for the crown. The House of York used the emblem of the white rose, and the House of Lancaster used a red rose-- thus the battles were called "Wars of the Roses."

In order to bring a lasting peace, Henry married Elizabeth Plantagenet from the House of York and on the occasion of their wedding on 18 January 1486 adopted the new emblem of the white rose of York placed within the centre of the red rose of York as the emblem of the House of Tudor.
