It was hot and dusty and full of disease. The Turks held the high-ground so you had to stay in your trench or walk along "safe" trails (which were usually crammed with men and supplies) to avoid snipers and machine guns. There was little water for either drinking or bathing. Some posts were so close together that you could hear the enemy talking so bomb-battles were common. The scrub was very dense and thick, many men got lost. Alot of bodies were never found. The cove beach was crammed with supplies and men, this was where the aid posts were and the headquarters for each battalion. A makeshift wharf ran out into the water and men bathed in the sea when they were relieved from the line. Shells constantly fell though, there was always noise and the smell of rotting corpses and the buzz of flies which got into every food container.
