Richmond, Virginia was the second capital, and for most of the Civil War.

Montgomery, Alabama was briefly the capital of the Confederate States, from February 1861 to May 1861. After the secession of Virginia in April, the capital then moved to Richmond (capital of Virginia) and remained there until the city fell to the Union in April, 1865.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, not New York City as some people claim. The United States was funded in 1776 and Philadelphia held the Continental Congress (the precursor to the US Congress). New York was made the capital after the ratification of the US Constitution before being moved back to Philadelphia until 1800 when it was moved again to Washington, D.C.

Philadelphia was the second capital city of the United States. New York City was the first capital of the United States once the Constitution was ratified. In 1790 Philadelphia was chosen as a temporary capital for ten years (until December 1800), until the nation's capital in Washington, D.C., would be ready.
