What was the first music ever written down?

There have been many opinions of what the first recording is. Some claim it was Thomas Edison's "Mary Had a Little Lamb was the first recording ever (which is the most famous rumor). It was the first recording that could be played back after recorded, but it wasn't the FIRST RECORDING EVER.

The first ever EVER produced was actually made on a device called a phonautograph. No, NOT phonograph, the PHONAUTOgraph. It was a device that could transcribe sound to a visible medium, but had no means to play the sound back after it was recorded. Thankfully, last year, people were able to scan the papers into a computer, and the first ever recording was found to be a 10 second excerpt of the french folk song, Au Clair de la lune. Most people will say he was singing "Au Clair de la lune, Pierrot repondit`." This, however, is not the case. Despite sounding like "Au Clair de la lune, Pierrot repondit`", it is not. It is the first line of the song, "Au Clair de la lune, mon ami Pierrot." I found this out by listening closely to a slowed down version, and found after "lune" that it sounded like "mon ami-" not "Pierrot." Also the very last seconds of the recording had two syllables, like in "Pierrot." NOT three syllables as in "repondit`."

But the first "real" music recordings began right after the turn of the century with Blues & Jazz. Talent Scouts recorded "slave songs" to recruit blues singers from the fields.

Actually a new discovery, it is now officially the song "Au Clair de la Lune" from 1860. It was recently unearthed, and much older than the previous record-holder, that from Thomas Edison. The new "oldest" recording comes from an unidentified French woman singing, being recorded by Edouard-Leon Scott.

Actually the first documented piece of music was in the year 100 c.e. It was called the Epitaph of Seikilos, found on a grave stone. It was also somewhat of a drinking song
