=Fort Necessity National Battlefield, in southwestern Pennsylvania, consists of three separate areas. The main portion of the park is the battlefield itself, site of the first battle of the French and Indian War, now home to the reconstructed Fort Necessity, the Mount Washington Tavern, a visitors' center, a picnic area, and several fairly short hiking trails. Also part of the National Battlefield are the grave of Major General Edward Braddock, located 1.5 miles away, and Jumonville Glen, 7 miles away.=

Well, no one knows exactly why it was named 'Fort Necessity'. As commander of the expedition Lt. Colonel George Washington had the right to name the fort. And it was a dire military 'necessity' that they build some fortification to prepare for an attack by the French forces. But Washington, in his writings, seldom mentions the name Fort Necessity and usually refers to the engagement as 'The Battle of the Great Meadows'. Also he was busy continuing the road he was order to cut while the fort was being constructed. Some experts believe the fort might have been named by Captain Robert Stobo who was the Military Engineer for the unit. And that he named it because of all the vital 'necessities' that the expedition lacked, such as food, troops, uniforms, etc.
