Roman engineering was aimed at communication and sanitation. The Romans built the famous stone-paved roads whose purpose was military. They speeded up the movement of troops to the front and the transport of supplies to soldiers at the from or in garrisons. These Roads constituted 20% of the enormous road network of roads built around the Roman Empire. Therefore, the more general purpose of road building was to make communication and transport easier and to facilitate trade. The Romans also built bridges with the use or arches. They could cross wider rivers and valleys, therefore contributing to the communication network. They also built ports to facilitate shipping. The Romans also built aqueducts to bring fresh water from the sources on the mountains to the towns. They also built sewers, outdoors public toilets and public baths. The aim was to improve sanitation.
During the Roman Republic works of arts were commissioned by rich Romans. The aim was to produce images of important people and to embellish the city. During the period of rule by emperors most of the art was commissioned by the emperors. The aim was to justify and glorify their rule.
The roman engineering and artistic achievements were to show that they were superior than any other empire at that time.Such as the aquaducts they built to bring water to the cities. They wanted to show that they were cleaner and yet still hold together a huge empire.
The goal of the engineers were communication and sanitation. They improved communication and transport by building a network of some 250,000 miles of roads around the Roman Empire. They also built bridges which could cross much wider rivers and valleys than before. They built aqueducts to supply the towns with fresh water from the sources in the mountains, sewers, public toilets and public baths. The goals of the architects was to build buildings which were commissioned by the rich or the emperors. The artists also produced work which was commissioned by the rich and the emperors. Therefore, the goals of the works of art were the goals of the rich and the emperors. The goals of the emperors were the legitimisation and the glorification of their rule.
Most engineering accomplishments of the Romans that we now consider 'artistic' are connected with water works; the aqueducts, to be exact. Their goal was to provide the cities with clean drinking water.
The great ancient Roman leaders had two major goals:
1. To enhance their power and prestige; and
2. They could do so with their second goal of making the Roman empire the most important one in its time.
