The main sacred place in Mecca (or Makkah) in Saudi Arabia is the Kaaba that is considered the first God House on earth. The pillars of Kaaba was raised by prophet Abraham (aided by his son Ismael); peace be upon them. Kaaba is surrounded by the Grand Mosque (or AlMasjid Alharam) that can accommodate up to 4-5 million Muslim to pray.

Quran says (meaning English translation):

"Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah ('Mecca or Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for Al-'Alamin (the mankind and jinns). In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham); who so ever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah or Kaaba) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah (or God and same God in Christianity and Judaism), those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns)."
