The 1960 presidential debates (Nixon and Kennedy) were the first-ever televised presidential debates. The first of four debates occurred on September 26, 1960. The debates marked television's entrance into presidential politics. They afforded the first real opportunity for voters to see their candidates in competition. They also served as precedent around the world. Soon after the debates, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Italy, and Japan established debates between contenders to national office.

It was the first ever presidential debate, and it arguably showed how televised debates could influence the result. As Kennedy won such as a narrow victory, the debate may well have influenced the result. In the first debate, Nixon was recovering from illness, hadn't shaved, hadn't put on stage makeup and appeared uncomfortable and perspiring. Although the first debate was a clear victory for Kennedy, Nixon won both the next two debates, while the final debate was a draw that saw the best performances from both men.
