The Dakota Indians were more commonly referred to as the Sioux, a derogatory name derived from part of a French word meaning "little snake." They were composed of four bands, and lived on temporary reservations in southwestern Minnesota.
On August 17, four young Dakota warriors were returning from an unsuccessful hunt when they stopped to steal some eggs from a white settlement. The youths soon picked a quarrel with the hen's owner, and the encounter turned tragic when the Dakotas killed five members of the family. President Lincoln dispatched General John Pope, fresh from his defeat at the Battle of Second Bull Run, to organize the Military Department of the Northwest. Some Dakota fled to North Dakota, but more than 2,000 were rounded up and over 300 warriors were sentenced to death.
In 1862 the Dakota Sioux were known as the Dakota/Dakotah or the Sioux or the Dakota Sioux.

In the past, Native American tribes that lived in North Dakota included the Ojibwa, the Assiniboine, the Chippewa, the Hidatsa, the Mandan, and the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota Sioux.
The Sioux originally inhabited the Great Plains region of North America, including present-day states like South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Montana. They have a deep connection to the land and consider these areas their homelands.
North Dakota is known as the "Sioux State" to recognize the Sioux or Dakota tribes of North Dakota. North Dakota's official state nickname is "The Peace Garden State".
The village of Sioux Falls, South Dakota was incorporated in 1856 by the 12th legislative assembly of the Dakota Territory. Sioux Falls was granted a city charter by the Dakota Territorial legislature on March 3, 1883.
Sioux Falls Hospital opened in 1894 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Sioux Valley Association was organized in 1894 and built the Sioux Valley Hospital in 1930.
