During the four years of the US Civil War, many states were the home of major and minor battles. Here is a complete list:
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida.
This question sounds like one that was handed out by a high school history teacher who has not read about the Civil War.
The Civil War was fought in many states. There were battles in all 11 of the Southern States, including Florida, believe it or not. There were battles further out West, including Arkansas, Texas, and Arizona.
Most high school history books mention one battle in the north--Gettysburg, PA---and one battle in the south---Vicksburg, MS---and maybe the first battle of Fort Sumter, SC, and the surrender at Appamatox Court House, VA. But there were many, many more battles that lasted 4 years.
Perhaps the two major and best known battles of the US Civil War were the Battle of Gettysburg and prior to that, the First Battle of Bull Run. Certainly the battles at Antietam, the Peninsula, Chancellorsville and Shiloh are also battles with a high profile.
There were more than two battles, but the major ones were Antietam, Maryland (September 18, 1862) and the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1-3, 1863).
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought at Gettysburgh, Pennsylvania and the Battle of Glorietta Pass was fought at Glorietta Pass, New Mexico.
