Another cold Canadian weather myth purports that White River, Ont, is the coldest place in Canada. White River is not even the coldest place in Ontario, let alone Canada. That notoriety belongs to Iroquois Falls which, at -58.3° C (23 January 1935) has the lowest temperature reported in Eastern Canada. White River's record low temperature looks almost mild by comparison at -51.7° C, recorded on 23 January 1935 - the eighth coldest reading in Ontario. http://www.canadianencyclopedia.ca/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0010200

This happens because Toronto is situated on a lake (Lake Ontario), where Ottawa is not. So in the summer time, the warm weather and hot temperature heats up the lake. It takes an awful long time for a massive body of water to completely change temperatures so Once winter hits, the temperature outsdie drops but the water is still warm from the summer, and therefore heat will rise out of the water and be blown around the surrounding area, like Toronto. But since Ottawa isn't near any massive bodies of water, just a tiny river, the temperature of Ottawa will iether be extremely cold, or extremely hot, depending on the temperature. And believe me when i say it gets cold! I live here :P

Winter temperatures in the Province of Ontario can vary dramatically from southern Ontario, which receives the moderating effect of the Great Lakes, to northwestern Ontario, where it can be bitterly cold. Temperatures in the northwest are often colder by 40º Celsius than those in the south. It is virtually impossible (and also meaningless) to determine what would be an average temperature for the entire province on any given day, let alone for the whole winter.
