Reformers were most upset by three main issues: The village priests married and had families, which was against Church rulings. Also, bishops sold positions in the Church, and this was called simony. Finally, kings appointed church bishops, and the Church reformers thought that the Church alone should appoint bishops. These all were part of the reformers' hope to get back to the basic principles of the Christian religion.

There really was no dilemma between the reformers and the Church. The Church was stuck with two problems, both of which she had to address. There were some real abuses by individuals at the time of the protestant revolt, one of the most glaring was the sad shape that clerical education was in. Martin Luther was actually considered a theology professor at this time in history! And yet his ignorance of Church doctrine was (and is) astonishing. The Church had to remedy these things, on the other hand, she had to address the personal salvation of those who were seeking to leave the Church. The heretics who were leaving the Church were committing the sin of apostasy, a very serious sin. They had been baptized Christians and they were throwing away their salvation with both hands.

.

The protestants had the dilemma of how to work out their salvation with "fear and trembling" while at the same time rejected the only means of salvation that Our Blessed Lord had left them - His Church.

Who were some of the main reformers outside the Catholic Church?

.Catholic AnswerThere were no reformers outside the Catholic Church, there were only protesters who left the Church and formed their own ecclesial communities. The Catholic Church was established by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, who sent the Holy Spirit to guide it always. Our Blessed Lord guaranteed that the Church, which is HIS Mystical Body, and His Bride, would remain spotless till the end of the world. You are asking about the protestant revolutionaries like Martin Luther, and Henry VIII. They were in no sense "reformers", that is a gross misnomer.

What reason did reformers leave the Catholic Church?

Since the early years of Christianity there have been disputes about the real way the church had to go. And every time that people don't agree on it, they can leave the church and start their own one. The main reason for Luther to leave the Roman Catholic church was a system where people could pay for their sins before they did. This way the Pope was raising money to build Saint Peters Cathedral in Rome.
