Taxation without representation was the straw that broke the camels back, but in a general sense the colonies were sick of being the free i.v drip for Great Britain. GB had exhausted all of it's Natural Resources and was importing goods from the colonies and reselling them to sustain itself. The colonies were basically like, "we can do that ourselves, we don't need you at all. You're freeloading."

Freedom was the driving force for the colonists who revolted against England. They were subject to British rule, but their interests were not represented in British Parliament.
