The White House tapes, together with the unexplained gaps, were probably the most damaging. Impeachment charges are never actually brought forth and a trial was never heard, so it hard to say for sure what evidence might have been the most damaging or even what further evidence might be uncovered or revealed.
Nixon was running against Democrat, Senator George S. McGovern at the time of the Watergate scandal.
On July 27, 1974 the House Judiciary Committee voted 27 to 1 to recommend the first article of impeachment against the president: obstruction of justice. The second article (abuse of power) was passed on July 29th, 1974 and third article (contempt of Congress) on July 30th, 1974. Richard Nixon resigned the Presidency August 9th, 1974
The media during Watergate served as a powerful watchdog against lies, corruption, illegal acts, and abuse of power in government, especially the Executive Branch. The media is attempting again in 2017 to be watchdogs with all 3 branches of government, but in particular, with the Executive Branch and President Trump.

The Watergate scandal was a political scandal in the United States in the 1970s. Named for the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., effects of the scandal ultimately led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, President of the United States, on August 9, 1974. It also resulted in the indictment and conviction of several Nixon administration officials. The scandal began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The men were connected to the 1972 Committee to Re-elect the President by a slush fund[1] and investigations conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee, House Judiciary Committee and the news media.President Nixon's staff conspired to cover up the break-in.[2] As evidence mounted against the president's staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in a Senate investigation, it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations.[3][4] Recordings from these tapes implicated the president, revealing that he had attempted to cover up the break-in.[2][5] After a series of court battles, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes; he ultimately complied.Facing near-certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and a strong possibility of a conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned the office of the presidency on August 9, 1974.[6][7] His successor, Gerald Ford, would issue a pardon unto President Nixon.
Congress enacted reforms to prevent future abuses of power.

The events collectively known as the Watergate scandal came to light during an investigation into a break-in at the National Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, DC in 1972. The investigation led to a widening circle of actions which resulted in the resignation of President Nixon in 1974. So the Watergate Scandal happened in 1972-1974.
Noo, he was too busy fabricating evidence against Iraq.
If the President is accused of stealing and the evidence against him is solid, he could be impeached, convicted and removed from office. After that, he could be indicted and tried like a common citizen.

There are many arguments for and against DNA evidence. One argument is that it cannot be disproved as deciding evidence.
So that, if one of his aides turned against him, he could use the tapes against them. He never thought for a moment that his own tapes would be used against him. A schemer never thinks their own scheme will backfire. They only see the positives from their point of view.
We need to know what is said is the truth and the way to do that is to fact check. President’s have lied about events to get the country into wars and Nixon lied about his sending men to break into the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building. This was against the law. Without fact checking and the free press people in power can get away with doing things against the common good of the people.
