John Brown's raid and take over of the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in Virginia had great significance for the radical anti slavery abolitionists who backed him financially. Many abolitionists such as Frederick Douglas, was asked by Brown to join the plan but rejected it as unworkable and an act of treason, not against the South but against the Federal government as the arsenal was a Federal military facility.

Even everyday people opposed to slavery believed that an armed revolution that Brown had planned was not a good way to abolish slavery.

On the other hand, radical abolitionists saw the executed Brown as a martyr for the cause of anti slavery.
