A. Lincoln kept the country united after a civil war between the states, helped to abolish slavery in the new country, was reelected in the middle of the war, and set in motion the beginnings of the transcontinental railroad from Omaha Neb. to San Francisco, CA. He also advocated forgiveness for the Southerners after the war was over. He also hired General Grant to run the military after the general's victory at Vicksburg, Miss. He fired General McClellan after the general's ineptitude at fighting the enemy.

President Abraham Lincoln is credited with preserving the union, which is to say, preventing the United States from breaking up into two countries, and also with ending the practice of slavery in America. It should be noted that the Emancipation Proclamation that Lincoln issued did not legally end slavery, which was only legally ended by a constitutional amendment that was enacted later, however, Lincoln did provide the leadership and inspiration which resulted in the end of slavery. He is therefore remembered as the Great Emancipator.
