Geheime Staatspolizei (states secret police) - the Gestapo were controlled by Heinrich Himmler, Reichfuhrer (commander) of the SS and a leading member of the Nazi party. Of course, Himmler was answering to Hitler..

If you're asking about the SS - Schutzstaffel (defense corps) who were under Hitler, they were not the police. They were a paramilitary organization.

German police during the Holocaust were called The Gestapo.

Another View: The German SECRET police were known as the Gestapo and wore no uniforms.

The German civil police (the Statspolezei) still operated as they had before the war although they, too, were brought under the command of the German Federal Government.
