John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, was the last Crown Governor of Virginia before the Revolution, from 1771 to June 1775. He directed a series of campaigns against the Indians in the backcountry of Virginia collectively called "Lord Dunmore's War". Increasing clashes with colonial leaders finally forced Dunmore to leave Williamsburg on June 8, 1775, and take refuge on a British warship, the HMS Fowey, in the York River.
