The Army of Tennessee was the name of a major Confederate army operating in and near the state of Tennessee. Their main job was to resist Union advances and keep Tennessee in the Confederacy.
The Union also had a Army of the Tennessee. This army was under the command of General U S Grant until 1863 and later under William Tecumseh Sherman. It had the objective of controlling the Mississippi River and was later assigned to the march on Atlanta and on to the sea.
The first objective of the Army of the Cumberland was to insure that Kentucky was not threatened by the Army of Tennessee. There came a point in the war, in July of 1863, whereby, having previous success in Nashville, Tennessee, more offensive operations were required. Based on orders from the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, the Army of the Cumberland was to take Chattanooga Tennessee and open up the way to Atlanta, Georgia. Chattanooga was a vital railhead and controlling this would help in the aforementioned goals of securing Tennessee and help the Union move on Atlanta.

Major General David S. Stanley was the chief of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Cumberland in 1863. Stanley was a USMA at West Point graduate, class of 1852. He was offered a commission in the Confederate army but elected to stay with the US. He saw combat duty in the battles at New Madrid, Island No. 10 and Corinth. Major General Rosencrans who was in charge of the Army of the Cumberland had great confidence in Stanley.

Major General Thomas L. Crittenden was the commander of the XXI Corps in the Army of the Cumberland in 1863. Crittenden was not a USMA graduate.He was a lawyer until the outbreak of the Mexican American War. He enlisted in the army and reached the rank of colonel. He sided with the Union when the US Civil War broke out. He was from Kentucky but was a Unionist. He was given command in the pro-Union Kentucky militia. He served in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth. He served first under General Buell and when that army transitioned into the Army of the Cumberland, The commander of the Army of the Cumberland in 1863 was Major General Rosencrans. Rosencrans had doubts about the abilities of Crittenden because he was not a USMA graduate. Nevertheless, Crittenden impressed Rosencrans for his bravery and gave him important assignments in the Tullahoma campaign.
