After his mother had her son (the future president) when she was a college student, she and Barack's father divorced; she continued her education, ultimately got a PhD and became an anthropologist. Barack never had much contact with his biological father-- he was a little baby when his father left, and he only saw his dad one other time. His biological father had a background in economics and studied for a while at Harvard. Barack also briefly had a step-father who worked for the Indonesian government. It should be noted that Barack Obama was mainly raised by his maternal grandparents, who lived in Honolulu and worked hard to make sure he got a good education.
