President James Madison, stampeded into a plan to invade and attempt to annex Canada, declared war, having been assured that, in the words of Thomas Jefferson, the takeover would be "merely a matter of marching."

The US invasions of Upper and Lower Canada were defeated by a force of Canadian militias, natives, and a smaller, but critical core of British regulars. That force chased the invaders back over the border, and captured Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

Things went so badly that the seven New England states seriously and publicly discussed seceding from the Union.

As a result, the United States' primary goal was defeated.

Britain, locked in a major war with Napoleon, was happy to discuss peace, but the subsequent treaty did not address American complaints about shipping, or the impressment of American sailors.

Two weeks AFTER the peace treaty, Americans won a military victory over a British force at New Orleans, and many newspapers used that event as declare the war a stalemate, or even a victory.

The trade restrictions were lifted because the British war with France ended with the Treaty and the British lifted their Impressment laws and the Chesapeake law. The 13 Colonies were able to live under the Constitution freely without the interference of the British Empire.

How did the outcome of the war of 1812 affect Federalist and the war hawks?

The outcome of the War of 1812 weakened the federalists party, but the philosophy of a strong national government was carried on by the War Hawks, who were apart of the republican party. Some of the causes of the war were because of British army's taking workers off American ships to work on theirs. Also because the west believed it was Britain's fault for the Indian attack for giving them guns.
