Air superiority .

AnswerThere was the evidence that the Germans would be a threat for England, as it became more and more obvious they were preparing for war.

The purpose of the Spitfire was to have an equal fighter against the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, and it was mainly used for intercepting German bombers and fighters during the battle of Britain.

to combat the German messershmit

The Supermarine S.6B was a racing seaplane developed by Reginald Mitchell for the Supermarine company in order to win the Schneider Trophy in 1931. The S.6B is often hailed as giving the impetus to the development of the Supermarine Spitfire and the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Supermarine's Chief Designer, R.J. Mitchell, created a design along the lines of the seaplane racer in response to an Air Ministry specification (F7/30) for a new and modern monoplane fighter. Retractable landing gear were added and the wings evolved into elipitcal shape and became the Supermarine Spitfire.

The Supermarine Spitfire was the only Allied fighter in production at the outbreak of the Second World War that was still in production at the end of the war, having gone through 25 variations.

The Supermarine Spitfire was originally designed as an acrobatic competition aeroplane like the Supermarine S6B which won the schneider trophy, but was adapted to become an aeroplane used in the war probably because of it's maneuverability.
