Basically, the world was divided two; those that followed the Soviet Union and communism, and those that followed the United States and democracy. Both countries were superpowers at the time, and soon had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the Earth. Both countries hoped to get countries to join them by offering them food and financial support. If the country excepted, naturally it would use that country as a model.
