There was a mixed reaction to the annexation of Bosnia by the Austria-Hungary Empire. Most people knew it was only a ploy to show the Germans and Ottomans that the Austrians and Hungarians were powerful as well. The communist sympathizers in the region, however, vowed to oust the invaders from Bosnian and Slavic land.
The assassination was part of the reaction of slav nacionalists to the Austro-Hungrian anexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908. Their ultimate objective was to obtain a secession of slav provinces from the empire, and unification of southern slavs in a single country (later known as Yugoslavia). Since the anexation, the resistence to the Austro-Hungarian occupation organized meny other attacks to Austrian authorities. Franz Ferdinand and his wife were only the most famous victims.

After the USSR collapsed, all of the former Soviet countries remained in a military alliance. This military alliance is called the Commonwealth of Independent States or CIS.
The US invited Turkey and Greece to join Nato alliance, where they remain to this day.
