On October 19, 1864, the Union forces of General Philip Sheridan defeated the Confederate forces of Jubal Early. The result was driving the Confederates from any hope of maintaining the Shenandoah Valley.
To forestall any Union attack on Richmond, it was a necessity for a Confederate assault on Union General Pope's new army, the Army of Virginia. Stonewall Jackson decided to attack one of General Pope's forces at Cedar Mountain. Jackson struck Pope on August 9, 1862. Jackson gained a tactical victory, however, he could not take advantage of it since Pope's entire army outnumbered Jackson two to one. Wen Pope decided to bring all his forces to Cedar Mountain, it forced Jackson to retreat back to Gordonsville.
