Native American cultures were fragmented and destroyed by intentional acts of the European settlers.
For instance, certain religious ceremonies were outlawed and not re-legalized until the late 1970's. Laws were passed that required Native children to attend special "Christian Schools" where they were forbidden to wear traditional clothing, or speak their native languages, this continued until 1965 (officially).
Inside these tribes there are three groups of peoples: 1. Sell outs; those that have fully adopted the American - European culture. 2. Pretend-ians (pretend indians) who claim to be native but follow little of, or none, of the traditional beliefs of the tribal systems. 3. Blanket butts, those traditionalists that refuse any American - European value system, and or, refuse to relinquish tribal belief and cultural values.
