There is NO "sole" cause for (almost) anything in life. Nearly everything from living creatures to man-made machines are the result of MORE than one cause/reason. In the particular case of the Vietnam War, there are TWO reasons for not winning the war: 1. Geography-Had Vietnam been an Island or Peninsula (such as Korea was) then the war could've been isolated/enemy supplies cut off...then the enemy could've been defeated. 2. Had there NOT been a cold war (communist super-powers), then the enemy could've been blasted back into the stone age (a quote from USAF GEN Curtis LeMay in 1965 when discussing North Vietnam), and even invaded! However, the threat of communist super power intervention prevented those risks.
* American soldiers could not differentiate between foe and friends. Every American soldier was dying in the small alien jungle of Vietnam. There was no choice but to withdraw.
