Providing a rudimentary education that combined public speaking skill, motivational inspirations, and lawyer-like savvy and subtlety (among other things), the sophists are likely to have assisted many individuals in many practical ways, given the importance of rhetoric in the ancient world. However that may be, they served as a part-inspiration for Plato's writing of his famous dialogues, which continue to be greatly important in philosophical and other ways.
