The house of Lancaster (symbolized by a red rose) and the house of York (white rose) fought each other over the crown. Both families were descendants of Edward III, so they both had claims to the throne. It ended with Henry Tudor (Lancaster) defeating Richard III (York) at the battle of Bosworth field. When Henry became king he married Richards niece, Elizabeth of York, in order to unite the houses and end the battle between them. The two rival symbols were merged into the new emblem of the red and white Tudor rose.

The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought between the supporters of two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet; the house of Lancaster (red rose) and the house of York (white rose). The wars were fought to determine which family and their supporters would control Britain. At stake were not only the rule of Britain at the time of the wars, but control in the future. The wars concluded in 1485 when Henry Tudor (of the Lancaster branch) married Elizabeth of York to unite the two factions. This immediately preceded the voyages of Columbus and the massive expansion of the British Empire. In essence, control of that future Empire was at stake, although it is doubtful that the combatants had any idea of how significant that would be.
